Sean McCabe, Realtor

Thank you for taking the time to read a brief bio about me and the industry in which I am involved.  My name is Sean McCabe, husband and father of two for over 25 years.  As a ex-Commercial Fisherman, I have lived in some of the most beautiful places on the west coast and Hawaii, including Alaska and Bellingham since 1987.   I fished for King Crab in the Bering Sea for six years and have owned and operated a Bristol Bay Salmon Boat and permit for sixteen years.  We also owned a Puget Sound Crab Permit for five years.   I have always been self-employed and have enjoyed the flexible lifestyle that fishing offered.

While living in Anchorage, Alaska in 1985 I first obtained my Realtors License.  I was just dabbling in real estate trying not to go to the Bering Sea for the winters, however the dream was not a reality.  Unfortunately the area had gone into a recession and I could not support my family.

My wife and I chose Bellingham because we wanted to be close to our families who were spread around California and Washington.  Bellingham was still a small town with a strong fishing industry and its proximity to Vancouver BC, Seattle and the San Juan Islands made it a very desirable place to call home.

The Real Estate industry offers flexibility that I have become accustomed to, making it ideal for school breaks, snowboarding at Mt. Baker and playing chauffer to kids and multiple grandparents.  I returned to the Real Estate buisness in 1997 and have recently started managing resort properties in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains.

Whatcom County - Boating, Skiing, Snowboarding, and Oh! Canada

On the subject of Whatcom county... here are a few of the reasons and activities that I feel make this the greatest place to live in America.

Boating! When I sold my fishing operation the first thing I did was purchase a 28 ft power boat for cruising the San Juan Island with my family . We take many trips a year to Canada as well. We have been to such places as Vitoria on Vancouver Island all the way up to and beyond Naniamo. Just last year we took a 9 day trip to Desolation Sound and on up the breathtaking Princess Lousia Inlet.

Skiing and Snowboarding! About eight years ago when my oldest son was in high school he brought home a Snowboard. I got to looking at it and decided to give it a try. I have never looked back. Soon my wife Stephanie and younger son Chance were also on the slopes! Stephanie took to the snowboard while Chance started skiing. Mt. Baker is just 50 minutes from Bellingham and regularly holds the record  snowfall in the Pacific Northwest. Just this year we finished building a cabin at the foot of the mountain in a little town called Glacier. From the cabin to the ski lift is about 15 minutes through the Mt. Baker  National Park. The area also offers many activities other than skiing and snowboarding. In the summer there are some of the best hiking trails that can be found! We also enjoy Mountain Biking, Kayaking, and of course fishing.

O Canada!!  Here in Bellingham we are just 18 miles to the Canadian Border. When we get the urge to go to a big city cost times we choose Vancouver Canada over Seattle.Vancouver offers a definite international flavor! There is fabulous shopping in the Robson street district, a huge indoor farmers market on Granville Island, the GM place which hosts many events such as concerts, sports, and trade shows.

Of course just north of Vancouver is the ski resort, Whistler, which is hosting the 2010 Olympics. Everyone here in Whatcom County is excited about being in such close proximity to this historic Olympic event! We usually make at least 2 ski weekends a year to Whistler and as of late my son Chance is taking advantage of the fact that whistler is now the Mecca for mountain biking. They operate a lift up the mountain for the bikers and there are a variety of trail for different skill levels ---- even one I can handle!!!

I hope you will find Bellingham and Whatcom County to be as enjoyable as I have.  I welcome you the most beautiful place in America - Welcome Home!
